There are large and small ways to volunteer. Below are descriptions of large annual events (Pageant of Bands and Jazz Dinner Dance) that require a longer time commitment towards that specific event. We also have standing crews that we call on for more specialized and frequent needs. There are also many short-term or one-time volunteer opportunities.

Pageant of Bands Crew
Overview
Pageant of Bands is a volunteer-run competition started in 1981. The event takes place every fall at Wilson Stadium. There are three levels of involvement:
- POB is currently looking for a vice-president to serve on the executive board.
- Two lead volunteers serve as AHS representatives to the New Mexico Pageant of Bands. For 2026-27 we have one representative continuing from last year and are looking for one more representative.
- AHS band earns money when we meet our required POB volunteer commitment, typically ~18
Duties of Representatives:
- Attend once monthly (January, February, March, April, May, November) meetings at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church 7:00 pm -8:00 pm, typically Wednesday
- August, September and October changes to 2-3 meetings in the lead up to POB
- Attend walk-through of Wilson Stadium prior to POB, typically at 5:00 pm
- Help recruit required POB volunteers for AHS
- Volunteer at POB all day for band director check in
- Coordinate POB ticket, patch, pin sales at ASH

Duties of Pageant of Bands Event Volunteer
- 3 hour shifts, duties assigned by POB
- You won’t miss the AHS performance- shifts are built around school performance time
- The POB representatives will have the shift schedule closer to POB, typically September/early October

Jazz Dinner Dance Crew
Overview
The Jazz Dinner Planning Crew organizes the annual Jazz Dinner Dance fundraiser in April and supports Ms. Grattan and the Jazz band before and during the event.
Duties (spring semester):
- Determine the menu and coordinate food purchasing and donations
- Coordinate decorations for the event and help get volunteers to set up/take down
- Solicit donated items for the silent auction and run the auction during the dance
- Get tickets printed and coordinate with the band directors to provide them to the students to sell
- Track ticket sales before the event and collect payment the day of the event
- Coordinate volunteers to help plan, decorate, serve, and clean up
Uniform Crew
Overview
The uniform team helps fit each symphonic band student with their marching uniforms, concert jackets, and additional clothing items as needed.
Duties (primarily before school starts and just before school ends):
- Fit students for a marching uniform, bibbers (i.e., band overalls), concert jacket, and other marching items during band camp
- Record which marching uniform, concert jacket, bibbers, and, if used, shako (i.e., band hats), gauntlets and gloves are assigned to each student
- Coordinate alterations, such as hemming, as needed
- Oversee the dry cleaning of the uniforms, concert jackets, and bibbers at the end of the year
- Check in the uniforms at the end of the year
Truck Crew
Overview
The truck crew drives the band box trucks to events, such as football games and competitions. Driving is local to the Albuquerque area. This crew is most active in the fall.
- May assist with loading and unloading the truck with band equipment
- Driving the truck from AHS to games and competitions and back to AHS
- May drive the truck to and from maintenance
Food Crew
Overview
The food crew organizes food for the fall marching season and coordinates ordering food for the Marching Performance Assessments (MPA) in fall and spring. These activities include menu development, coordination of the purchase, preparation, and ordering of the food (working closely with Ms. Grattan), and the set up/clean up crews. They also keep a list of food allergies/intolerances.
Duties (primarily in the fall semester):
- Create the menu with Ms. Grattan
- Feed the band students before football games, MPAs, and competitions
- Create list of snacks for purchase/donation
- Pack the wagons and coolers with water, drinks, and snacks for the football games, fall MPA, and competitions
Chaperones
Overview
Chaperones are band family members with an APS background check who attend band events off campus with the band students. This includes riding the bus to the location, assisting the students while onsite, providing first aid if needed, and making sure everyone remains safe.
Duties (primarily in the fall semester):
- MUST have an APS approved background check
- Take attendance on the bus before leaving campus and prior to leaving the site
- Make sure the students have water, sunscreen, food, etc. while on site
- Provide the lanyard bathroom pass to go to the restroom
- Provide simple first aid if needed
- Be a resource and emotional support to any student who may need it
- Keep the students safe

Fundraising Crew
Overview
The fundraising crew helps raise money for the Boosters. This includes finding new fundraising opportunities, helping students and families raise money with best practices, and coordinating volunteers at fundraising events.
Duties:
- Brainstorm fundraising opportunities and implement ones that are feasible
- Past fundraising efforts include carwashes, craft fairs, restaurant fundraisers, selling band merchandise
- Coordinate volunteers for established fundraisers like the mattress sale, pistachio sale and March-a-Thon
- Liaison with potential sponsors/donors
Social Media / Communications Crew
Overview
The social media / communications crew let the community know how great our band students are by sharing photos and video clips to the Booster’s social media accounts and maintaining communication with band families.
Duties:
- Take photos / record video of the band at games, events, competitions, and concerts
- Share to social media accounts
- Let band families know about upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, etc.
- Send notices via Remind and the Booster’s email account
